Today’s edition of Fish Untamed Reads covers another story of a family’s resilience in the wilderness, a months-long journey across the U.S. by wagon, and a classic story for kids and adults to enjoy together.
1. Impossible Beyond This Point by Joel, Marcella, and Virgil Horn
Similar to Winds of Skilak, featured in Fish Untamed Reads 6, this is a story of a family who left behind the comforts of modern life to scrape out a rugged existence in the woods. This one takes place in California and features all the interesting aspects of living a life disconnected from normal creature comforts. From building their own sawmill to extracting gold from the nearby river to make a bit of money, the Horns show that it’s still possible to live off the land.
2. The Oregon Trail by Rinker Buck
This book was suggested to me by my Kindle, and I downloaded it as a filler while I found another book to read. It turned out to be one of my favorite reads of the year. After becoming fascinated by the history of the Oregon Trail, Rinker Buck decided to recreate it for himself by buying a covered wagon with his brother and riding the length of it behind a team of mules. The book is a combination of his own personal account of traveling the Oregon Trail by wagon, and summaries of different aspects of Oregon Trail life from the 1800s. He mentions the fact that while much of the trail today has been paved over by interstates and other development, there’s also a significant portion that still exists much the way it did when it was the main route west for thousands of travelers.
3. The Call of the Wild by Jack London
This is a classic that’s great for adults and kids alike. It’s a quick read that can be finished in a day, and it provides a timeless story of wilderness and adventure without getting bogged down in dense descriptions or boring sidenotes. Its simplicity and ease of reading are perfect for what it is. For those who aren’t familiar with it, The Call of the Wild is a story about a dog named Buck who finds himself torn from his posh suburban life and thrown into the middle of the Klondike gold rush. It’s there that he reconnects with his instincts and finds the call of the wild.
